Flexible Learning Unit
|
The Flexible Learning Unit provides a range of services, programs and development resources for those seeking to adopt flexible approaches to learning, and to enhance teaching and learning through technology. Staff work with teachers and academics to create innovative teaching and learning experiences using multimedia and communication technologies.

ICT Professional Development
FLU provides services for staff in the area of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT). From support for flexible delivery projects for on or off campus students, to training in ICT software.

New Initiatives
As a development unit we have a strong interest in identifying new and relevant initiatives, which will provide increased opportunities for a wide range of students. We would welcome approaches from staff that are interested in developing new initiatives; examples of which might include Work Based Learning and RPL.

Toolbox customisation and training
FLU staff will assist in the creation of your personalised portal page giving your students access to the Toolbox/s of your choice and support you with training in this area. Web Development
FLU staff can develop dynamic web pages and web applications for University Departments on a fee for service basis or through a service agreement negotiated with FLU.

Interactive Multimedia
FLU provides technical and educational support for the production of interactive multimedia materials (CD-ROMs) for teaching purposes. Programming, animation, preparation of graphics and production of audio and video material can be provided. Educational development staff can assist in designing and planning interactive multimedia material which will enhance student learning. Please be aware that these are usually substantial projects and require major resource input.

Online Teaching
Educational development, web programming, staff training, WebCT administration, animation, preparation of graphics and digitisation of audio and video are available. Trouble shooting for staff experiencing difficulties in the development or maintenance of online units is also available.

TAFEVC
TAFEVC is a Learning Management System (LMS) that provides academic staff with a coursework shell to manage an online learning environment. The TAFE VC offers a range of tools for teachers to create and manage their learning environment. These include communications, unit/module management, student management and tracking, and online assessment.

Videoconferencing
FLU manages videoconferencing s'ware (Flash Communication Server) for educational and administrative purposes. Videoconferencing can link you to sites around Australia and internationally. You can conduct:
- lectures or introduce guest speakers into your teaching
- administrative or research project meetings
- consultations or present training activities
Free demonstrations can be set up for groups interested in learning about videoconferencing as a teaching tool.

Web Publishing
Intermediate and advanced training is offered for individuals and departmental teams to support the incorporation of web-based learning activities and support materials.

Instructional Design
Instructional designers provide support to the development team in designing and developing courses and units that effectively and efficiently meet the needs of the learner target. The role can be likened to that of an architect in a building development. The instructional designer also helps course developers access and integrate instructional multimedia services.

Production of Teaching Materials
FLU staff provide educational development, study skills support, video and audio production, videoconferencing, web and multimedia programming and editorial assistance. These services are available to staff to assist with the review of existing print teaching materials, the development of new materials and the development of online, video or audio resources.

Technical Assistance for Print Material
The Production Support section of FLU provides DTP templates as well as advice to members of the University regarding choice of software for desktop publishing and how to format teaching materials. The trained staff also offer a consultancy service to help solve specific DTP problems. In addition, the desktop publishing services of the Production Support staff are available to other University departments on a fee-for-service basis.

Over the past year, the Flexible Learning Unit has worked collaboratively with individual staff members and project teams within VU to develop innovative and practical learning resources.
These resources include:
- DATABASES
We design web databases for both internal use and external clients. Internal projects like the Professional Development online booking system are widely used within VU.
- ONLINE DEVELOPMENT
We assist staff to develop online materials that are usable on the Web, WebCT or as print resources.
- WebCT & TAFEVC
A number of online learning sites have been developed with assistance from the Flexible Learning Unit. We assist departments to use WebCT & TAFEVC to develop the standard subject-based sites as well as non-standard uses like project and communication hubs.
- CD-ROMs
Interactive CD-ROMs including Video and Audio are developed for training and induction purposes.
Learnscope
LearnScope is a national professional development project which helps participants learn to use flexible delivery approaches in vocational education and training (VET). It is an initiative within the Australian Flexible Learning Framework (Framework). The Flexible Learning Unit is responsible for managing this project at VU.
This showcase provides access to information about projects developed at FLU. This information is provided as inspiration to your own projects.
PD Online Booking System
PD Online Booking System
It was developed to automate and centralise PD bookings for staff at VU. The booking system features automated waiting lists, reminder emails, staff history etc.

Sit'n Talk
Sit'n TalkSit'n talk is a communication tool for the Service Industries Teachers Network. Participants can pose questions via the bulletin board and access relevant documentation.

Road Transport Toolbox
Road Transport ToolboxThe tasks associated with the Certificate II in Transport and Distribution Toolbox are based on real situations found in road transport locations nationwide. These tasks aim to provide an authentic learning experience that relates to the work environment that the learner has or will encounter.

Hospitality & Tourism Department - Assessment Centre
Hospitality & Tourism Department - Assessment CentreThe Assessment Centre is an online RPL tool. Users can match their existing quals and work experience to the new competencies. It allows user to identify their gaps of learning and develop a work-based project against the units of competence and the gaps.

MCQ Practice Test
MCQ Practice TestCommencing in 2005 the Australian Medical Council (AMC) multiple choice question (MCQ) examination has been administered by computer, bringing it into line with other international screening examinations for medical registration. As part of this development the Victorian Medical Postgraduate Foundation Inc. has produced this practice examination to enable candidates and potential candidates to familiarise themselves with the new computer administered format.

InfoTAFE
InfoTAFEInfoTAFE is the Victoria University Online Staff Induction System. InfoTAFE has been designed to assist staff to quickly easily locate relevant information about their department at Victoria University.

The Flexible Learning Unit has a number of resources that are available to staff who are undertaking online or multimedia projects.
- VIDEO
2 Digital Video Cameras are available for staff use as well as a Digital camera which records lower quality MPEG video. For editing and producing video tapes and DVDs, we have a Video Editing Unit running Ulead and Premiere.
- AUDIO
Flexible Learning has an Audio Mixing Desk for recording and mixing audio for web sites, CD-ROMs and Powerpoint presentations. We have even supported projects to create music CDs!
- COMPUTER LAB
Room 130 at the Newport campus is a fully equipped 15 workstation computer lab and can be booked by us or through the general office at Newport.
- PROJECT WORKROOM
A 5 workstation computer lab that is available for staff use. Typically, the room is available for project work, workshops and training. It is equipped with: 5 Workstations; Printer; Screen for data projector; Flatbed Scanner; 2 Whiteboards; Kitchenette.
