Awards for Teaching Excellence

The Teaching Awards celebrate and give recognition to teachers who have demonstrated excellence in their teaching and contributed to enhancing the quality of teaching and learning in higher education. In 2008 the Carrick Institute will select up to 28 recipients over eight categories, who will receive a Teaching Award and $25,000, paid to the recipient's university for allocation.

Categories

There are eight categories of Teaching Awards:

5 Discipline Categories
  1. Biological Sciences, Health and Related Studies (including Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Nursing, Medicine, etc)
  2. Humanities and the Arts
  3. Law, Economics, Business and Related Studies
  4. Physical Sciences and Related Studies (including Architecture, Building and Planning, Engineering, Computing and Information Science)
  5. Social Sciences
Other categories
  1. Neville Bonner Award for Indigenous Education
  2. Early Career Award
  3. Priority Area Award (2008 – Work integrated learning, including situated learning, practicum, clinical education, work placement, cooperative education, etc).

Eligibility for Nomination

(These are somewhat complex, and you are encouraged to read the full Guidelines p. 27)

In short:
  • Your nomination must relate to teaching activities in higher education, and may be for individuals or teams, and may include full time, part time, continuing or contract staff.
  • The Neville Bonner Award is open to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous academic staff, but must relate to contributions to Indigenous education.
  • Early Career Awards are open to staff with no more than seven consecutive calendar years experience)
  • Please read carefully the conditions relating to eligibility for re-nomination for previous recipients (p.27).

Assessment and Selection Criteria

Applications will be assessed across five criteria, and must demonstrate:
  • Evidence supporting the claims for excellence via formal and informal evaluation
  • The extent of creativity, imagination or innovation (embracing traditional or technology based learning environments)
  • Evidence from Student Feedback Questionnaires (Guidelines pp.53-55), references and teaching materials.
The five criteria are:
  1. Approaches to teaching that influence, motivate and inspire students to learn
  2. Development of curricula and resources that reflect a command of the field
  3. Approaches to assessment and feedback that foster independent learning
  4. Respect and support for the development of students as individuals
  5. Scholarly activities that have influenced and enhanced learning

Nominations

The application for nomination must contain the following, and be provided in paper and CD ROM/DVD format (for full details, see Guidelines, pp.29-32)
  1. Nomination form (Guidelines, pp.50-52)


  2. Written statement (covering all the below, in order)
    1. Synopsis (150-200 words written in third person)
    Overview
    Selection Criteria
    2. Approaches to teaching that influence, motivate and inspire students to learn
    3. Development of curricula and resources that reflect a command of the field
    4. Approaches to assessment and feedback that foster independent learning
    5. Respect and support for the development of students as individuals
    6. Scholarly activities that have influenced and enhanced learning


  3. Curriculum Vitae (limited to 3 A4 pages, with one addition page per each additional member of the team)


  4. References (two, of no more than one A4 page each, one from the Head of Faculty, Department or School)


  5. Student Feedback Questionnaires (30, administered by the Institutional Contact Officer)


  6. High Quality Photograph (Digital, of Head and shoulders against white background, for program and publicity purposes)


Support Materials

Supporting materials (optional) are limited to a maximum of two of:
  1. website (provide URL)
  2. CD ROM or DVD
  3. video or audio tape
  4. 10 pages of printed material
Again, there may be an element of “who has the time and effort?”, but it looks suspiciously like a promotion application.

Nominations for Teaching Excellence Awards must be submitted to the Staff College by 13th June 2008.
