Purpose of the policy
The purpose of the induction for teaching policy is to:
establish a framework for the induction of staff members with a teaching responsibility
situate induction within a “whole of career” approach that includes early induction, extended induction and ongoing professional development.

Who is required to complete the initial induction program for teachers?
All newly appointed teaching staff who are required to teach at least 10 hours per year are required to satisfactorily complete the prescribed Initial Induction Program for teaching staff.
Why is it compulsory for new teaching staff to complete this program?
Teaching staff need to complete this program because it introduces the systems, structures, principles and practices specific to teaching at VU with a particular focus on Teaching and Learning policies and teacher capabilities required at VU.
I have just started teaching at VU but I've been teaching in various tertiary education institutions for the last fifteen years. Why do I need to complete this induction program?
T his program introduces teaching staff to the systems, structures, principles and practices specific to teaching at VU which may vary from those at institutions where you have previously taught.
I have been teaching at VU for the last twenty years. Do I need to complete this initial induction program?
No you don't but you are encouraged to consider participating in the Extended Induction Program which is based on the Graduate Certificate in Education (Tertiary) as part of your ongoing professional development.
I have completed a Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training. Can I receive any credit towards the Initial and/or Extended Induction program?
Yes, you could receive some recognition for formal study for units or courses that could be deemed to partly satisfy the Initial and/or Extended Induction program.
Do I need to pay for my participation in the Initial Induction Program?
No, the cost of the subject Learning Matters: initial induction to teaching at Victoria University will be picked up by the university.
Do I need to pay for my participation in the Extended Induction Program?
Contract or ongoing staff with teaching responsibility, do not have to pay to enrol in the Graduate Certificate in Education (Tertiary). Sessional staff however, would have to pay full fees to complete the program, although they may be able to apply for RPL for some subjects.
