  6. Unit of study Aims:

This unit aims to build on the current and prior experiences of participants to extend their knowledge of educational practice and enhance their effectiveness as teachers. It explores the development of learner centred teaching, including supporting student engagement and the management of the learning environment.

  7. Learning outcomes:

  Victoria University teachers will work towards the awareness and achievement of the following Victoria University Teacher Capabilities:

•  Teachers use the body of knowledge about tertiary learning and teaching to inform their practice.

•  Teachers know how to engage their students in active learning.

•  Teachers know how to teach their discipline or field of practice.

•  Teachers provide a learning environment that engages and challenges their students and encourages them to take responsibility for their own learning.

•  Teachers establish and maintain clear and consistent expectations about roles and responsibilities of all members of the group.

•  Teachers manage a group of students for the benefit of all learners.

•  Teachers use Victoria University systems and structures to support learning and teaching.

 

8. Content:

The content of this unit of study will be negotiated with students depending on their prior learning and professional experience. It will be based on the following topics:

Managing learning in different environments, including classrooms, workplaces and online environment.

 

Learning theory and the development of a positive learning environment that supports active learning

 

Negotiating learning arrangements, expectations, roles and responsibilities, relationships to supervisors, colleagues and peers for both students and teachers.

 

Establishing appropriate teaching and learning practices and environments with consideration of specific disciplines and fields of practice, e.g. laboratories etc.

 

Understanding the VU policies and procedures for safe and equitable learning for all students.

10. Methods of Teaching:  

This unit is taught using learner-centred approaches and may incorporate a range of learning activities, such as workshops, discussion with peers either online or face-to-face, inquiry into the participant's own practice or other workplace-based projects.
