Subject-based Student Mentoring at VU
ASSURING QUALITY
Three methods are used to ensure that the Subject-based Student Mentoring
Program is monitored for quality and effectiveness. These are:
Student Mentor Training
Prior to the commencement of the Student Mentoring Program staff who teach
the subject and staff from SLS and Student Counselling conduct a training program for the Student Mentors. The students are provided with relevant and appropriate information such as concepts that students might find difficult, key
assessment periods and assignments and so on. They are also taught basic group facilitation
and referral skills. Emphasis is placed on being part of a larger team of other
students and staff who can be called on to help.
In-semester monitoring
Student Mentors meet regularly with the subject coordinator during semester to be made aware of topics being
covered and potential issues that students might raise. The Student Mentors are
supported via telephone, email and face to face. At least one 'trouble shooting' meeting is held during the semester between
student mentors and staff to discuss current and ongoing issues/concerns.
Staff also maintain contact with students via face to face contact, email and
telephone. An SLS staff member occasionally attends the Student Mentoring sessions for a
brief period.
Formative and Summative Evaluations
Student Mentors keep
a journal of their experiences and reflections during the semester. These form
part of their assessment for the subject and provide useful insights and
feedback to staff about issues arising for the Student Mentors and the groups. Students and
staff are surveyed at the end of the semester to determine their thoughts and feelings about the success or
otherwise of the program.
