WebCT/BLACKBOARD TOOLS & RESOURCES

Unit Request Form Use this to create new unit shells in WebCT/Blackboard
User Check Tool

Use this to check the status of students who can't log in to your unit. To gain access to WebCT, students must appear on both VUSIS and the WebCT databases. This can take up to 48 hours after enrolment.

When used, the tool not only reports on status, but will automatically add eligible students to the WebCT database immediately without waiting for the next 24 hourly 'add student' cycle.
Tune up your browser for use with WebCT You can do this within WebCT, but here is an external page to use when you can't ...
WebCT Icon Downloads A selection of WebCT icons from the University of Edinburgh. Careful with this web page - a minor problem with the security certificate may cause 78 separate boxes (one for each icon!) to pop up for you to click.
WebCT Icons From the City College of San Francisco. In order to use these, you have to agree not to alter them, and naturally to acknowledge the copyright owners.

SOFTWARE POWERLINKED TO WebCT/BLACKBOARD

Respondus Site Respondus Inc. develops testing, survey, and game applications for eLearning. Most products are highly integrated with WebCT/Blackboard, making it easier for instructors to create and manage online materials.

N.B. VU has a site-wide Respondus licence - download your copy from here (you will need to login) and NOT from the Respondus site. Email Vyt or Ant for the Respondus licence key.
Respondus LockDown Browser Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that provides a secure testing environment within within WebCT/Blackboard. Students are locked into the assessment and are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications.
Turnitin The online plagiarism prevention software used by VU. Unfortunately not yet powerlinked to WebCT because of technical issues, but you can access and login to Turnitin directly through their website.
Equella

(previously known at VU as The Learning Edge
)
A Digital Repository (Learning Content Management System or LCMS) that integrates with our existing Learning Management System (LMS) - i.e. WebCT/Blackboard.

FLU will be providing PD on Equella in the near future.

WEB 2.0 SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS

Elgg

Aperto eLearning Solutions:

"...focuses on integrating innovative Open Source technologies with commercial learning management systems (LMS), such as WebCT and Blackboard. Aperto was created by WebCT co-founder Sasan Salari, who left WebCT in January 2006 after eleven years. Sasan saw a significant interest by higher- and further-education institutions to embrace the use of new community-building technologies in conjunction with their LMS." Aperto has now partnered with Elgg (see item below).
ELGG Learning LandscapeElgg and WebCT Integration
This system was mentioned by Kevin Reeve as one way of including a blogging tool in a course; Elgg is one of the WebCT powerlinks. "Elgg is a hybrid of weblogging, e-portfolios and social networking. It is hoped this combination of features will provide an engaging environment for learners to create their own learning space and then connect to others, forming online communities of learning. ... There are two options to get an Elgg account. You can register for an individual account hosted by Elgg or, as VU has done, install it on your own server. Elgg is an open source application. ... Elgg has been developed to serve as a stand alone personal learning landscape or as a complementary addition to existing learning environments. The emphasis with Elgg is very much on the learner."
In a WebCT forum posting, Sasan Salari offers this: "Further to Kevin's message regarding Elgg and WebCT, you might also want to have a look at the Flash demo that I created, which shows the integration and some of the Elgg capabilities."
