The VU Guidelines on learning that inform teaching

About the Guidelines

As part of a strategy to focus teaching at VU on student learning, a set of 16 guidelines were drafted drawing heavily on a similar set of guidelines at the University of New South Wales.   The guidelines have been aligned to the VU Teacher Capabilities and provide a tool for identifying the practices underpinning these capabilities which result in effective learning. The Guidelines relate to 5 aspects of learning, which link to the VU Teacher Capabilities in the following way:

Capability Guideline relating to ...
1

Teaching staff know how their students learn and how to teach them effectively.

Engaging students in learning.

2

Teaching staff know the discipline or field of practice they teach.

Contextualising students’ learning experiences.

3

Teaching staff know their students.

Creating an inclusive learning and teaching experience

4 & 5

Teaching staff plan for effective learning &

Teaching staff assess student learning effectively.

Designing and teaching an engaging, contextualised and inclusive curriculum

6

Teaching staff create and maintain effective learning environments.

Creating and maintaining engaging and effective learning environments.

7

Teaching staff operate effectively within their institutional context.

Knowledge and understanding of the institutional context is required for effective demonstration of any of the Guidelines.

8

Teaching staff reflect on, evaluate and improve their practice.

A willingness to reflect on teaching from the perspective of how students can learn most effectively is implicit in all the Guidelines

Acknowledgement: The UNSW Guidelines and associated Toolkit were originally conceived by Adrian Lee, then the Pro Vice Chancellor (Education & Quality Improvement) at UNSW and Michele Scoufis, Director of the UNSW Learning and Teaching Unit with considerable help from the UNSW Committee on Education and the Staff of the LTU. VU is grateful for the authors and UNSW for allowing VU to base its website on the UNSW site.
