OVERVIEW OF GUIDELINES ON LEARNING THAT INFORM TEACHING

ENGAGING students in learning

Teaching staff know how their students learn and how to teach them effectively

  1. Effective learning is supported when students are actively engaged in the learning process at every stage.
  2. Effective learning is supported by a climate of inquiry where students feel appropriately challenged.
  3. Activities that are interesting and challenging but which also create opportunities for students to have fun, can enhance the learning experience.
  4. Students learn in different ways and their learning can be better supported by the use of multiple teaching methods and modes of instruction (visual, auditory kinaesthetic, and read/write)
CONTEXTUALISING student's learning experiences

Teaching staff know the discipline or field of practice they teach

  1. Students become more engaged in the learning process if they can see the relevance of their studies to professional, disciplinary and/or personal contexts, for example through linking learning experiences to the workplace or wider community
  2. Students should graduate with attributes in both discipline based and generic knowledge, skills, competencies and experiences and these are most effectively acquired in a disciplinary or field of practice context
CREATING INCLUSIVE learning & teaching experience

Teaching staff know their students

  1. Learning is more effective when students’ prior knowledge, skills, competence and experiences are recognised and built on
  2. The educational experiences of all students are enhanced when a broad range of socio cultural characteristics, practices or beliefs are drawn on in learning, and these mirror the community at large
DESIGNING & TEACHING contextualised & inclusive curriculum

Teaching staff plan for effective learning & Teaching staff assess student learning effectively

  1. Learning can be enhanced and independent learning skills developed through appropriate use of information and communication technologies
  2. Effective learning is facilitated by assessment practices, and other student learning activities, that are designed to support the achievement of desired learning outcomes
  3. Clearly articulated expectations, goals, learning outcomes and course requirements increase student motivation and improve learning
  4. Meaningful and timely feedback to students improves learning

CREATING & MAINTAINING engaging & effective learning environments

Teaching staff create and maintain effective learning environments

  1. Learning opportunities should challenge students to apply newly acquired knowledge, skills, competence and experiences (KSCE): KSCE need to be reviewed, refreshed and strengthened as students look to future application
  2. When students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning, they are more likely to develop higher-order thinking skills such as analysis, synthesis and evaluation and be better prepared for life long learning
  3. If dialogue is encouraged between students and teachers and among students (in and out of class), thus creating a community of learners, student motivation and engagement can be increased
  4. Learning cooperatively with peers – rather than in an individualistic or competitive way – may help students develop interpersonal, professional and cognitive skills to a higher level
