Acknowledging the need to inject innovation into existing delivery methods, the furniture studies department at Victoria University has shifted existing pedagogy for first year apprentices in furniture design away from a highly instructional course methodology to a guided learning approach. Discover how this department is empowering students to gradually have greater control of their learning as they progress through the course. Hear about the development process and how the course uses a series of Design Briefs to gradually wean students from close supervision to creative independence.

Kangan Batman Institute and Robert Bosch

Robert Bosch Australia had a requirement for its team leaders to be introduced to a culture of lean manufacturing, with minimal disruption to production.  Kangan Batman Institute were approached and, together with Robert Bosch, they designed a training program with content, delivery and assessment tailored to the company’s 24 hour production cycle.

William Angliss Institute and Compass Group

The Compass Group required an induction program suitable for its entire workforce “from kitchen hand to CEO”, scattered over remote and regional, CBD and suburban locations throughout Australia.  The program was designed in partnership with the William Angliss Institute and is delivered via a website, DVDs or MP3 players.

Innoven/Goulburn Ovens Institute and Ridley Agriproducts

Innoven at Goulburn Ovens Institute mapped Ridley’s workbooks which set out the processes each operator used to effectively carry out their job to the level of best practice against competencies from training packages, provided gap training, and addressed identified gaps between current and best practice.  Regular partnership meetings ensured training was tailored to specific operational outcomes for Ridley AgriProducts.

Winner of the Group Training Australia Partnership Award for 2008, the AFL SportsReady program combined resources from AFL SportsReady and Swinburne University’s TAFE Division establishing a pilot program for Indigenous Australian school-based apprentices working in sport and recreation.  The project ran throughout 2007 and involved six Indigenous and two non-Indigenous students.  The students worked on events including the Dreamtime Game at the MCG and the Australian Basketball Championships, as well as organising and conducting basketball and tennis clinics for primary school students.

Kangan Batman Institute/Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE) and PPG

ACE (the Automotive Centre of Excellence) is positioned to become the largest and most advanced automotive training facility in the Southern Hemisphere.  Strengthening links between the automotive industry and the tertiary education sector, the ACE will become a key player in the rapidly developing field of automotive technology, involved in new research and application of improved fuels, engines and automotive design technology.  Industry engagement, particularly with key sponsors, VACC, PPG, Repco, Wurth and 3M, underpin the educational experiences at ACE.

Wodonga Institute and Moira Healthcare Alliance

The Moira Healthcare Alliance in northern Victoria has an arrangement with two major training providers in the region, Wodonga Institute and Charles Sturt University, to support, train and educate staff.  Alliance staff are trained through the Certificate III in Aged Care and the Certificate IV in Nursing at Wodonga Institute, then after a follow-on program, may move into the Bachelor of Nursing at Charles Sturt University conversion cohort.  This initiative has developed the skills of both individuals and the community as a whole.

Box Hill Institute and Paleotechnology

TAFE Industry partnerships take many forms, including a “company in residence model”.  PaleoTechnology is “company in residence” at Box Hill Institute.  Under the arrangement, Box Hill Institute trains work-ready graduates with excellent laboratory skills and entrepreneurial skills for the industry partner, PaleoTechnology International.
