Models of VU college language, learning and numeracy support and development
Are your students struggling with the demands of their course? If so, we hope that this report will assist you to identify some ways in which you can work with VU College to support them. Learning support and development options include VU College on-going provision (see p.4) and a wide range of collaborations which can be negotiated between VU College and HE /VE faculties.
This report documents the models of language, learning and numeracy (LLN) support and academic skills development currently being provided by VU College in collaboration with faculties. Models can be used separately, combined in new ways, adapted to support specific needs or developed for a new sector or faculty. Each LLN model is illustrated by at least one example. Funding sources are also documented: programs designated as 'Central funding' are provided from VU College recurrent funding. Other funding may be through VU College or VE faculty Student Contact Hours, Higher Education EFTSL, International or domestic fee-for-service, or a variety of project funding sources. Students will be informed of support options via HE / VE faculty staff where appropriate.
The report had its beginnings in a 2009 Skills Victoria Innovations project - Supporting Success, managed by the then School of English Language and Preparatory Programs and Services (ELPPS). This was a pro-active initiative by ELPPS to respond to VU's English Language Support and Development Strategy by documenting existing practice and piloting two new initiatives. In 2010, the project was extended to document models of LLN / Academic Skills development to include collaborations between HE / VE faculties and the then four schools within VU College.
In preparing this report, I consulted widely with VU College staff and thank the following people for their support and sharing of expertise:
- Language and Learning Community of Practice (LLCOP) convened by Peter Moraitis and comprising teachers and Program Managers
- Project Advisory Group including Amanda Pearce, Associate Director Language and Learning; Jacinta Richards, Julie Dixon, Virginia St James and Maree Wheelens (Heads of School) and Corinna Ridley, Senior Educator
