English language strategy
The VU English Language Strategy has been developed to embed English language development into all VU courses consistent with a range of recent University and government initiatives and policies. It relates to HE, VE and FE sectors in the University, and will be extended and updated to address Language, Literacy and Numeracy in 2011.
The Strategy is directed at students for whom English is their second language (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) and Non English Speaking Background (NESB) students), both local and international. However it is also inclusive of interventions which support the development of language specific to the needs of a particular field of study, trade or profession. It is recognised that such interventions are of benefit to students who speak English as their first language as well.
English language support and development is seen as the responsibility of all teaching and teaching support staff at VU. The Strategy covers course-focused initiatives, initial and additional language and learning programs, student-focused initiatives and professional development initiatives for staff.
