VU teacher capabilities

Victoria University (VU) has identified eight teacher-focused capabilities essential for achieving quality learning and teaching.
These teacher capabilities:

The following indicators may prove useful in your self-reflection and review.

Know how your students learn - and how to teach them effectively

  • Use the body of knowledge about tertiary learning and teaching to inform your practice
  • Know how to engage your students in active learning
  • Know how to construct programs, use resources and structure activities which support learning

Know the discipline or field of practice you teach

  • Have a sound, critical understanding of the discipline or field of practice you teach
  • Ensure you're able to identify the key features and relevance of this area to your students
  • Know how to teach this area

Know your students

Develop an understanding and respect for your students.

Know and respond to the range of learning needs of your students – in terms of:
  • the knowledge they bring
  • the learning approaches they prefer

Respond to the cultural and linguistic diversity of your students



Plan for effective learning

Establish clear and achievable learning goals with your students through your knowledge of:
  • students
  • your discipline or field of practice
  • pedagogy

Design appropriate activities and associated resources for teaching and the learning of your students.

Design assessment that:
  • identifies and reports student learning
  • provides feedback to students about their learning
  • informs further planning of teaching and learning

Align the following for effective learning:
  • learning goals
  • teaching and learning activities
  • assessment tasks

 

Effectively assess your students' learning

Provide prompt, informed and constructive feedback to your students on their work.

Ensure consistency in assessing student work by applying consistent judgement criteria and standards (rubrics).

Monitor student achievement and maintain accurate records of their progress.

 

Create and maintain effective learning environments

Provide a learning environment that:

  • engages and challenges your students
  • encourages them to take responsibility for their own learning
Establish and maintain clear and consistent expectations about roles and responsibilities of all members of the group.

Manage a group of students for the benefit of all learners.

Operate effectively within our institutional context

Understand the multi-sectoral nature of Victoria University - and use this understanding to work effectively with colleagues and students.

Ensure you're familiar with our learning and teaching policies - and the implications for your practice.

Use our systems and structures to support learning and teaching.

Meet your legal and ethical responsibilities in your teaching role .

Reflect on, evaluate and improve your practice

Regularly reflect on and critically evaluate the quality of student learning, with your students and peers.

Contribute to the development and maintenance of communities of practice (that support your ongoing development as teaching staff)

Identify your own learning needs - and engage in professional development activities to maintain:

  • currency in your discipline or field of practice
  • your effectiveness as a teacher
