Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Teaching Excellence 2005

Dr Katie Hughes
Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences
Winner:
Vice Chancellor's Citation for Teaching Excellence within the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences
This award is made in recognition of Dr Katie Hughes' contribution to the professional and personal lives of students undertaking Gender Studies.
Her emphasis is on developing students' sense of themselves as active, self-directed learners and contributing members of communities. Gender Studies curriculum includes material that reflects the diverse student community, is real to students and recognises the multiplicity of their lives.
Effective support for students is provided through Dr Hughes' development of a variety of foundation materials and assessment activities that cater for different learning styles.
Classroom practice centres around providing a dynamic learning culture that lays the foundation for the subject - one of discussion and debate to foster students' ability to argue coherently and to come to an understanding which may be personal but is based on sound scholarship.
Dr Hughes' four texts reflect her research interests in gender, the family, education and feminist theory and are strongly linked to her teaching practices.
