These awards are made in recognition of the distinguished contribution made by Associate Professor Stephen Bigger across the field of education in chemistry as well as in chemical research.
His international reputation and commitment has resulted in his recent invitation by the American Chemical Society to become a peer reviewer of the Journal of Chemical Education as well as an appointment in Victoria as a subject specialist vetter for VCE chemistry.
Associate Professor Bigger has created a rich learning environment by beginning with the recognition of students' individual learning styles and responding to their varying needs. Systematic analysis of student feedback has led to the development of some innovative support materials such as "MacMS", a creative modular computer package that effectively teaches the basic principles of magnetic sector mass spectrometry which is now used internationally.
His research informs his teaching and the teaching informs research resulting in world-class outputs in both the teaching and research arenas. The material delivered has been peer reviewed and published internationally so that the delivery of current world's best practice in education is assured to students at Victoria University.
