Secondments as Professional Development
The Staff College offers secondments to university staff as a professional development opportunity.
In 2008 the Quality Teaching and Innovation Unit has 6 secondments on offer. Each secondment is for 2 days per week for a semester.
It is a professional development activity that offers VE and FE teachers and HE academics the opportunity to work in a central unit
of the university and thus gain insights into the institution’s operations and functions, in particular the cross-sectoral nature
of the institution. Secondees acquire these insights by working alongside experienced educational developers located in the Quality
Teaching and Innovation Unit in the Staff College. The collaborations include experience of designing and delivering professional
development activities that support curriculum and teaching development in a range of teaching environments.
Secondees return to their Schools of origin at the end of the secondment period and receive ongoing support in their own career
development through the linkages they have formed with educational developers in the QTIU who are ‘embedded’
in each of the University’s six faculties.
Secondees engage in a project which has a focus on professional development provision to teachers or teaching related staff
in the university. The key aim is to provide secondees with opportunities to experience the university from a different
perspective and gain insights into how it operates.
