Learning in the Workplace and Community

Service Learning

Service Learning (as defined in the Learning in the Workplace policy) "is a teaching and learning approach that combines community based service with student learning in the provision of that service”

The service learning approach can be used in many of VU’s Learning in the Workplace models.

While service learning can involve the development of generic employability skills, it also aims to develop the values of citizenship and service.

Service learning is detailed in a recent literature review undertaken by the Postcompulsory Education Centre (Keating, 2006, p26-28).

The Postcompulsory Education Centre is also undertaking a research project in 2007 to explore good practice in service learning. This will involve a literature review and the identification of good practice examples.

To be involved in this project or to find out more, contact PEC directly on 9919 5455.

Good practice examples in service learning are coming soon!
